There are around half a million listed structures in the UK. This includes all buildings built before 1700 that survive in anything like their original condition. Buildings constructed between 1700 and 1840 are usually listed. Some properties may not be listed in their entirety but contain elements such as brick walls, chimneys or beams, that are considered to have a special listed status.
GRADE I around 3% of listed buildings fall into this grading. They are considered to be of significant historic interest and are described as national architectural treasures.
GRADE II Around 92% of listed buildings fall into this grading.
GRADE II * - The remaining 5% of listed buildings fall into this grading and are considered to have additional special elements.
In Scotland, listed properties are categorised as A, B or C depending on their style, period or building type.
There are more than 8,500 listed buildings in Northern Ireland. These include houses; special or historic interest buildings or man-made structures such as fountains or memorials. As in England and Scotland, there is a unique grading system A, B+ or B1/B2, depending on individual features and the era.
Each grading or category comes with a specific set of rules concerning maintenance and any renovation or conservation you undertake on the property. In turn, this can affect the level of insurance you require to protect your home and contents.
