One major reason for having a specialist policy in place for your listed, thatched or historic property is to ensure that if you were to make a claim on the policy, you would be allocated a loss adjuster and contractor who understand these types of properties.
There have been cases previously where, because one of these properties has been insured on a policy designed for a standard property, they have been allocated a contractor who has subsequently caused more damage to the property due to the fact they do not understand the specific needs and requirements of this type of property.
For example, following a water leak at a listed property, the contractors appointed by a non-specialist insurer used a number of dehumidifiers in an attempt to dry the property out, which unfortunately led to substantial cracking of the rendered timber frame, making the damage considerably worse.
