There is believed to be approximately 300,000 thatched roofs in the UK. Unknown to many people, the amount of thatched properties in the UK is still increasing as more and more new houses are now being built with thatched roofs rather than with the standard construction. Due to the aesthetically pleasing look that is displayed by a thatched property, thatch has become much more popular in the UK over the past 30 years, and is now a symbol of wealth rather than the poverty that it once depicted.
In England and Wales around 75% of all thatched properties have been Listed by the English Heritage. This means that if the property was to be completely destroyed in a tragedy it would have to be rebuilt and brought back to its former glory. This is another reason that thatched properties should be insured by a specialist. Here at Listed Property Protection we ensure that all of our clients have peace of mind that if the worse was to happen, we can guarantee that the policy they have in place will ensure that their property is brought back to its original beauty while complying with every requirement as per the conservation officers request.Arrange a
Until the late 1800s, thatch was the only roofing material available to the majority of the UK population not only within the countryside but also in many towns and villages. However, the use of thatch declined the production of Welsh slate began in 1820, along with the increased accessibility provided by canals and railways which made other materials more readily available. However, thatch did not become redundant as a result, and in fact the number of thatched properties actually increased during the mid-1800s as agriculture expanded in the UK.
There are approximately 1,000 full-time thatchers that currently work in the UK, and as mentioned above thatching is becoming popular again because of the renewed interest in preserving these beautiful historic properties.
